Sounds like you prefer sports to regular workouts. Is plain old exercise boring compared to the sport and competition of something like squash? I have friends who say they love tennis, squash, or basketball, etc., but are bored in aerobics or gym exercise.
Me? I kind of flinch at flying objects!
Two years of not doing sports is not all that long. In college it was probably more readily available to you and now you'd have to set it up. I've gone much longer periods of inactivity.
Figure out what would be enjoyable to you. Don't pressure yourself. Find something you like, try it (ie, don't force yourself into some committment you might not be able to keep--like a certain number of days/week, etc.). When you start grad school, will there be sports facilities available to you as a student?
Also, a lot of cities have social volleyball leagues for young adults. I used to have friends who participated in that and they liked it a lot--it seemed to provide both the fun of a sport and some social contact, but wasn't too seriously competetive or anything.
