I don't want to belabor this, and of course I can't speak for Karen. I thought she was confirming when zen could come back, and the reference to time was meant to convey how much she was anticipating her return. Sort of like "I'm counting the minutes," to convey how much you can't wait for something good to happen. I don't think she was as much asking a question about time at all, as she was really asking to confirm the date.
This seemed so very obvious to me, and viewed in this light, a response which only responded to the time portion of the question struck me (and apparently zen too) as being insensitive and frankly hurtful. I'm not saying you intended to be hurtful, but if you view karen's question as being "I'm counting the minutes until she comes back," then one (actually I) could (and did) view your response as "I'm counting every minute I can keep her away."
Your reputation for obtuse responses which deflect rather than answer questions is legion. This is one instance when I genuinely wish you had been more obtuse and less literal. I'm sure if you said something like "yes, the 24th is the day," no one would have thought twice about it, and there would have been no chance that zen could feel that the door to her return was being open begrudgingly.
