Depression aleviated through diet

Posted by Vale on January 20, 2007, at 13:06:33

I started a diet some weeks ago in order to try and improve the symptoms of an unrelated ( to depression)condition, and have have been pleasantly suprised that it has caused the virtual disappearance of the moderate depressive symptoms that have been bugging me for some years. Prof. Loren Cordain promotes what is essentially a "Stoneage diet" to cure or ameliorate various conditions that plague modern western civilisations. His website is www.thepaleodiet.com and it's worth taking a look.
After only three weeks of this diet, I have noted dramatic improvements in the following areas,
Sleep
Motivation
Energy levels
Mood stabilization
Reduction in anxiety levels.
reduced aches and pains.

All in all not a bad deal for simply avoiding certain foods. ( I have taken no AD's or pyschoactives during this period)

Yeah, that's my experience in a way. I was put on a diet something like that which I follow in spirit at least.

This morning (here he goes) I had stewed blueberries and goji berries with almonds rolled oats and cinnmaon. The rolled oats is not really meant to be in there. And then black tea.

What is obvious is that my energy levels are much more even.

It's not hard to follow, is it? I'd been so sick for so long that the diet was dead easy. The first time in decades that I'd managed to dig myself out of the hole I was in.

Thats great news vale. Can you tell me what you typically eat? And what sort of foods you have to avoid on the diet, and also what you can eat?

I'd quite like to give it a go, but unfortunately (or fortunately) I don't eat red meat whatsoever, in fact I'm mostly vegetarian (but I will eat fish sometimes). So I think the diet might be quite difficult for me to follow. I'm actually trying to give up dairy, but I live in Finland, which has a pretty high intake of dairy food, and if you're vegetarian, it means you get to eat alot of cheese.

Kind regards

Meri

Sounds nice declan! :o)

I love blueberries. hmmm.

Oh well.

I'd really like to give this sort of diet a go, but there are some major hassles - I'm a student, so I'm broke, and can't afford health food type stuff, and even if I could afford it, you can't buy that sort of stuff here in Finland, I mean I have enough trouble just trying to find pumpkin seeds. And I have these poisening myself fears so I get irrational about certain products I see in the supermarket.....oh well. At least I can try to avoid dairy.

What about things like wild oats? Or just oats in fact? Surely your palaeolithic ancestors would have eaten some grains that just so happen to occur in the wild. Like quinoa perhaps?

Oh well.

Hi,
I was also virtualy vegetarian untill about a month ago, not anymore. the paleo diet proposed by Loren Cordain was adopted as an effective acne treatment, the antidepressant effects were an unexpected side effect. The meat you eat doesn't have to be red.
Lots of Omega 3 rich fish will do. ( not a problem in Finland) But it's one of those diets that need strict adherance especially for the first few months, after that one can add on things a bit at a time.
Once again , check out the website www.thepaleodiet.com , all the info. you need will be there.
This diet won't get you "high" but it'll sure make you feel a whole lot better, physicaly and psychologicaly.

Thanks for taking the time to post the reply. I was wondering if you could post what you eat in a typical day?

I'm quite keen to try it and I've found the website to be relatively unhelpful in what one might typically eat in a day. Yes, lean meat, seafoods, fruits and vegetables and nuts, but how does that translate to everyday eating?

Kind regards

I must say before I started this diet I was an avid bread and cereal and dairy product consumer. So at the start it is difficult. ( on a similar scale to giving up smoking) But it's only the first week like that. Here is a typical day:

Breakfast: Fried bananas sprinkled with cinnamon( in olive oil) Boiled apples. Occasionaly boiled or poached egg. Glass of fresh pressed orange juice.or simply water.

Mid morning snack. Bannana or a Pear.

Lunch: Fish or chicken or lean red meat. with mixed fried or boiled vegetables ( only in olive oil for frying) Mixed salads, Celeriac, Beetroot,
lettuce, tomatoe. Garlic, Red Onions added.

Mid afternoon snack: yes, you guessed, a Bannana

Evening: Soup made with fresh veg. Tuna salad.
Occasional omelette.

Evening snacks: Almonds, Hazel nuts, Oranges, Pears.

Drinks: only freshed pressed juices, lots and lots of water.( occasionaly a dry red wine,)

Prohibited foods: All junk food and beverages. Bread, Rice Potatoes, Legume veg. Coffee, adding sugar, too much salt. All dairy products.

There you go, It's not that bad.
This reply might get booted out of "Alternative" and put in "Food", but I guess you'll find it.

best wishes

Vale
