What percentage poop out?

Posted by NewQuestions on February 10, 2009, at 8:29:21

Any studies on what percentage of people poop out, what percentage can find another drug to take its place, and what percentage can't and must go off the drugs? Is it dose related?

I'd love to see a study. As the ad's don't work for me. My doc said yesterday that I should just stick to what is comfortable for me and try and get out even more and maybe look into natural hormones and get mine tested that estrogen might be good since no cancer in family. Just my situation first ad worked after beging horribly sick for three months. Also pdoc said that thyroid definitely effected any psych condition. Well at least she was honest with me as I directly asked if she felt meds really worked and she kind of hemmed and hawed and this was her answer including theraphy. Phillipa

I'm sure I have read somewhere that tricyclics have a much lower incidence of 'poop out' (or more precisely, the patient stops responding) than the SSRIs. I really can't remember where I saw the article though.

I guess it's a case of trying individual drugs and just seeing how you get on. Sorry I can't be of more help!

I've read that about TCAs too. I think there was some speculation that drugs that work on more than one neurotransmitter may be less likely to poop out. So SNRIs would be less likely to stop working than an SSRI. And if there is poop out, augmenting with a drug that has a different action, like adding bupriopion to fluoxetine, might help alleviate it. I think the notion of downregulation might come into play here, but I'm not sure. That stuff is over my head at this point.
