Christmas used to depress me beyond belief. I dreaded it. After three years, I finally admitted this to my p-doc (also therapist) and found that cathartic. I stopped holding it in and feeling ashamed for mot having this Norman Rockwell christmas. My husband couldn't have cared less about christmas. So we just stopped trying and went to a movie and then for Asian food.
This christmas, a friend invited us for dinner with her children and grandchildren. All these presents exchanged. I found the whole thing uncomfortable. The stupid presents. The piles of discarded wrapping paper and boxes. The boring food.
When my daughter was about 15, she asked if we could stop the present-giving. All she really wanted was money. When she was 16, I stopped getting a tree and putting up decorations.
I now regard christmas as just a kind of boring day.
