A decent rule of thumb is to pay attention to what the locals are doing.
About now, the ice road season is opening in northern Canada. Big rigs weighing up to 120,000 pounds have their only opportunity to get into many northern communities at this time of year. They drive right across the ice on both rivers and lakes. The driver has to maintain a very careful control over his speed, as the ice actually bends up in front of the truck, like a bow wave. Absolute maximum speed is about 30 kmh, or you go through. Here's a link to a great history with photo gallery: http://www.thedieselgypsy.com/Ice%20Roads-3B-Denison.htm
