I think you know more than you realize, as you understand that different places have different sunrise and sunset times.

At my locale, sunrise is 7:27, and sunset is 5:28. Within a timezone, the exact numbers can vary by up to one hour, but the duration of the day will be identical.
England is north of Toronto, so I think your numbers might be a bit off. London is at 51 degrees 32 minutes N latitude, whereas Toronto is 43 degrees 40 minutes N. Your day length is shorter than ours, just now. The official numbers for London are sunrise 7:33, sunset 4:56.
Our day is 10 hours, 1 minute. London's is 9 hours, 23 minutes (and 24 seconds, according to http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/astronomy.html?n=136).
