Memory loss and difficulty thinking

Posted by Gracie2 on December 26, 2001, at 16:30:23

I majored in drinking in the Army and continued to drink heavily for many years. I also suffered from depression and insomnia, and I believe the alcohol was responsible for most of my symptoms. I quit drinking after starting a regimen of pyschiatric drugs, including Antibuse. After six months I quit taking my medication, because I didn't like the way it made me feel. I am clean and sober and should be on top of the world, but there's something wrong with my brain. I have memory lapses and forget things constantly. I'll walk upstairs and forget what I'm looking for. People constantly say to me, "You told me so-and-so just last night, don't you remember?" And I don't.
What's the matter with me?? Did I destroy so many brain cells that I'll never think properly again, or does it just take time for your brain to adjust to operating without chemicals? After all the work I put into quitting drugs and drinking, this is just depressing beyond words. Does anyone have information?
Thanks- Gracie
