I read that lithium chloride (LiCl) has been used as a salt (NaCl) substitute. The potassium chloride (KCl) is still used. Of course, such substitution only works if the deciding factor is the salty taste, because these minerals play very different roles in the body, although I think lithium can partially substitute for sodium.
They are all electrolytes, and maintaining the right balance of them (and others) is crucual. Sometimes I wonder whether, and/or how much, electrolyte imbalances may be involved in mental health issues.
