bipolar caused by endocrine dysfunction?

Posted by fairn on January 25, 2009, at 1:15:38

Hi i was wondering if anyone has any opinions on bipolar disorder being a combination of symptoms from a combination of problems with the endocrine system due to poor nutrition/malabsorption. It seems as though the symptoms of chronic fatigue adrenal fatigue/insufficiency, hypoglycemia, thyroid problems, also some pituitary problems all have very similar symptoms to bipolar disorder especially bp II there is evidence of the role of the hpa axis in BP but not a lot of research in that area ...ive been testing my blood sugar lately and notice when im irritable and "manic", (my mania is primarily anger, loss of patience, insomnia and headache,) it is dangerously low ive started the diet for it along with chromium and another nutrient cocktail adressing the possibility of mitochondrial causes for bp please if you have any thoughts or suggestions dont hesitate to post.

Thanks!

interesting, don't know if it ties to mitochondria directly but intermittent fasting improves whats it oxidative chain i think. it also improves hypocretinergic tone improving mood. Cellular energy state is affected by creatine and it has antidepressant properties and has a few cases of induction of mania. ALCAR and coq10 can both improve functioning if its problematic in certain cses. alcar i notice improving mental energy, especially if i didn't sleep enough.

I am solidly convinced one need look no further than the adrenal/cortisol axis to find what is pulling the triggers in either unipolar or bipolar. The question is, is it due to the adrenal gland itself, the pituitary sending the instructions, or a compensation for something wrong with the thyroid, or an imbalance with DHEA. I am also convinced the primary cause of any and all of the above are lead and mercury accumulation. Another top suspect is unsuspected Lyme disease even when one has no recollection of a tick bite.

I believe, without much scientific backing to make my case, that all of the psychotropic drugs modulate the adrenal/cortisol axis in one way or another, as well as the pituitary.

Bleauberry - I have read your posts with great interest. You have mentioned countless people who have been in the mental health system, who later discovered underlying causes for their illness outside of the field of psychiatry.

I have an appointment with a new endo. in a week. I am typing out a brief list of symptoms and questions for her. Do you have a resource you can refer me to to print out and bring to my appointment? I don't want to bring a pile of journal articles - but maybe I could point them out to her in case she hasn't seem them; or better yet, maybe an aggregate compilation of the issues you discuss.

I am convinced the endo system is so intertwined with psychiatric issues and treatment. I am so looking forward to this appointment, and I want to be as best prepared as possible.

Thanks in advance!
