Recent success with stuff...

Hello -

finally managed to drag myself (fingers crossed) OFF the sleep med zopiclone which was making me an anxious depressed mess the next day.

Was trying to sort out my Ca:Mg problem and may have done it. Controversely bought some high quality dolomite and am taking this with a bit of extra magnesium at night, plus some high potency valerian. Feeling MUCH better during the day - heart palps are gone and am sleeping most of the night - wake up at 6am and take more valerian and Mg and sleep more.

I'm on my 5th night without sleep meds.

I also take (but have been taking) -

fish oil (6 caps ~1g EPA)
small pill multi (Kal energy) - not much - take less than recommended dose
dolomite (4 tabs per day ~ 400mg Mg/700mg Ca, but it's carbonate, so who knows how much I'm absorbing)
extra Mg (glycinate - 200mg at bed, extra 100mg on early awakening)
strong valerian extract (GNC - 1 gelcap at bed, one at 6am)
Holy Basil extract (one in the morning)
taurine (1g in the morning, to counteract the glycine from the Mg)

Man something is WORKING as I feel very different. I can only guess that I really am absorbing the stuff in the dolomite as it it the only thing I've changed. I've read it contains lots of other things (good and bad).

Does anyone here a) believe that absorption of Mg carbonate is crap and/or b) that dolomite contains lead?

That obviously is the thing I'm worried about.

My sister had the same reaction to zopiclone - it makes her mega anxious the next day. The last night I took it, the next day I cried all day - I cheered up by the evening but swore I would rather give up my daytime energy than suffer those kind of side effects.

Loops

I checked a nutrition reference I have and found this statement about Dolomite >

Dolomite is claimed to alleviate Insomnia by inducing Sleep when Dolomite is consumed in the evening (according to anecdotal reports)

The Calcium Carbonate (Chalk) found in Dolomite is poorly absorbed by the body.

There's no mention of lead or toxicity

Dolomite?!

Thats a type of rock! I did a geology degree!!! ;o)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dolomite

Whats the optimal ratio of Ca:Mg ??

Also whats the daily recommended allowance of Ca and Mg?? Currently I'm on 145mg/day of Mg, which is probably abit too low.

I don't know anything about dolomite but the rec for magnesium is 400 mg. I read recently that the rda was going to 800 mg in the 1960's but politics intervened (due to some kind of food program long ago... minerals had to come from food) and it was lowered. I'm not sure if that is true.

can you tell me what taurine seems to do for you? it was so cheap i picked some up just cuz people were talking about it here.

the one thing i noticed is it seemed to promote speedy digestion (i'm guessing because bile salts are made of taurine).

i think i also saw that taurine inhibits adrenaline?

just curious of folks experience with it.
