Chocolate ?

Posted by MM on February 28, 2005, at 2:04:25

I don't want to um hog the board, but I've been meaning to ask about chocolate. Since I was a little girl I've had INTENSE cravings for chocolate, like the death by chocolate dark chocolate super delux cake, pretty much daily, and since I like dark chocolate better than the other kinds, I don't think the sugar factors in as much. As I've read more about chocolate's effects on the brain/mood, I've come to the conclusion that it was/is my body's drug of choice for depression/anxiety. So, I wanted to ask the very knowledgeable people here if that indicates any kind of deficiency to them, or raises a flag somehow (like, "you need more..." type of thing)or what might work for me. I also thought I'd ask if anyone knows if you can supplement chocolate? Like seperately take all the active things in it (there-by avoiding the calories) or some kind of concentrate? It might be a silly question, and I apologize if it seems like a waste of time post, but if I could find a way to do it, I think it could possibly be a huge help. Thanks very much.

I read once that if you crave chocolate intensely (HELLLOOO.. what woman doesn't??) that you may likely have a magnesium deficiency.

I notice I Crave it much more around my cycles so that might be the explanation.

Well I crave it daily, and indulge daily. I take extra mg, and am postmenopausal. So, what is the reason? Fondly, Phillipa PS I like Lindt Dark and White Chocolate Truffles.

i support the magnesium theory and the efa thing

Lindt is my favorite too but I prefer the milk chocolate.

Also, another reason for chocolate is the PEA (phenylethylamine) which is good for countering depression too.

I need chocolate during the PMS time. Magnesium doesn't seem to have much of an effect, the need is still there, although perhaps lessened...have to take more notice.haven't figured out what it is.

Compounded chocolate is the nasty cheap one, does nothing for me,..except give me a headache and wipe me out.

I note some of the nutrition/phsiology lecturers at uni eat chocolate too ..and admit to addiction as well.

Maybe if I take magnesium and EPO ..and the check if addiction is lessened..says me who's just eaten chocolate ..probably after reading the name on here :-)

I've read about the magnesium thing, but I never tried it. I think I might have read that chocolate cravings can mean a zinc deficiency too, but I would bet on being wrong about that (though I did recently start taking some more zinc and do think I needed some/helps with my mood). PEA seems interesting. EPO? EFA? Not sure what those are. There is a good mix of things in chocolate that someone needs to duplicate, calorie free :P (chocolate.org had some good info on the different things that make chocolate so good for mood)
I will have to try more magnesium. Thanks for the replies.

No offense intended folks, but you guys are amateurs. ;) Go to this web site and discover chocolate heaven. I'm partial to Dolfin - try one of their sampler boxes. I haven't tried a lot of the brands on that site, so I'm sure I'm missing out on a lot.

Cocoa powder is as close to a concentrate as you can get. I've never heard of chocolate extracts, like you find with so many other herbs, to concentrate the active ingredients. Dark chocolate gives you more chocolate bang-for-the-buck, as it can contain up to 15-fold the cocoa powder concentration when compared to milk chocolates. The added calories in milk chocolate can be problematic.
