hi all,
someone recently recommended to me that a combo of glucosamine & chondroitin would help joint pain and bone spurs & such. My mom was very interested in this (she has arthritis) and wanted to know if it would be OK to just start taking them. I'm sorry if this is a repeat question (if so, pls refer me to the thread!)Has anyone had experience with these two things? Can they be beneficial? What do they do? Are there side effects or interactions?
thanks in advance!

> jenstarHi Jen,
My father has osteoarthritis and the most effective thing for him is DHA max by Jarrow. He does take glucosamine/chondroitin and he does get some relief. Devil's claw works well for him too.glucosamine/chondroitin are saccharide complexes that make up the tissue such as cartilage - chondroitin sulphate has been found to inhibit histamine production..
"Chondroitin sulphate inhibits connective tissue mast cells."
I take a saccharide complex by metabolics that contains all the essential saccharides (glucosamine is one of them, I think chondroitin is made of galactosamine and glucuroninic acid) plus I take MSM as a lot of saccharides need sulphate - pain and inflammation may reduce the body's own ability to strengthen joints with sulphate. Another joint saccharide, hyaluronic acid or hyaluronan has recently become available as a supplement, before it had to ben injected! Hyaluronan is a vital part of the synovial fluid"The role of synovial fluid filtration by cartilage in lubrication of synovial joints--I. Mixture model of synovial fluid."
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=PubMed&list_uids=8253819&dopt=AbstractAlso take serrapeptase which works well for joint pain...
http://smart-nutrition.net/serrapeptase-testimonials.htm
other things to try are looking at the gut..
"Immune activation in the small intestine in patients with rheumatoid arthritis."
allergy, my dad has reduced pain if he avoid foods in the nightshade family...tomatoes, potatoes, etc... and wheat...I get joint pain if I drink milk.
Nitric oxide excess (infection/inflammation?) and glutathione deficiency are all implicated too.
Hope it's not too confusing, but wanted to get across some wider aspects of what might be going on as well....and pull together some ideas for my dad too!

Here's a few articles from the site, WholeHealth MD (alternative med, but quite cautious):

Hi Ray,
Just reading thru thread.. re your dad's arthritis.
Not sure if this will help but I had arthritis about 10 years ago. I got rid of it by exercise...rode bike at gym and held knees...arthritis in knees and fingers mainly.
It hurt but after about 9 months it went away. Comes back a little if I slack off too much...and have to up the exercise egain...I should do more consistently :-)
I walked down Snowdon with a couple of 76 yr old men.
One had arthritis when he was 70 was supposed to go in for an operation of knee joint.
He pleaded with his doc if their was any alternative and luckily his doc told him..yeah, get a bike and ride it.
This guy hadn't been on a bike since he was a kid, but was prepared to do anything to avoid surgery and the steady decline from then... so he did that.
Said it killed him for about 2 years..but he planning the next week on cycling around Europe..starting in Holland. His arthritis was entirely gone..we practically jogged down Mt Snowdon:). I let them goahead about 2/3 way down. He said not only that but his lung function had improved so much that the bit that was working was as good as a full lung of a normal person's (he'd had TB).
No signs of depression either :)
Just to put exercise in the picture. ..fits in there somewhere.
I've met quite a few people(lost count) in the past 10 years that have successfully reversed arthritis with bike riding.

>Thanks Jan,
He's had his knees replaced now...never liked excercise, but he is walking much mor than he ever used to since the op - think it is helping the rest of his joints, even if it's too late for his knees!
