Hi Ray,
Just reading thru thread.. re your dad's arthritis.
Not sure if this will help but I had arthritis about 10 years ago. I got rid of it by exercise...rode bike at gym and held knees...arthritis in knees and fingers mainly.
It hurt but after about 9 months it went away. Comes back a little if I slack off too much...and have to up the exercise egain...I should do more consistently :-)
I walked down Snowdon with a couple of 76 yr old men.
One had arthritis when he was 70 was supposed to go in for an operation of knee joint.
He pleaded with his doc if their was any alternative and luckily his doc told him..yeah, get a bike and ride it.
This guy hadn't been on a bike since he was a kid, but was prepared to do anything to avoid surgery and the steady decline from then... so he did that.
Said it killed him for about 2 years..but he planning the next week on cycling around Europe..starting in Holland. His arthritis was entirely gone..we practically jogged down Mt Snowdon:). I let them goahead about 2/3 way down. He said not only that but his lung function had improved so much that the bit that was working was as good as a full lung of a normal person's (he'd had TB).
No signs of depression either :)
Just to put exercise in the picture. ..fits in there somewhere.
I've met quite a few people(lost count) in the past 10 years that have successfully reversed arthritis with bike riding.
