Fish oil! r there any side effects?

Posted by clairey on December 27, 2003, at 12:14:36

I have read the side effects like stomach upset and fishy burps, so i got an enteric coated brand for that.
But i read some weird posts on here about it causing insomnia, anxiety even!!
I am not on any drugs but would like to start a nutritional program for GAD.

Is fish oil good for anxiety? and do these weird side effects occur?
Also i have a ratio of 6:1 EPA-DHA thats 500mg of EPA and 100mg of DHA, is that too high to start?
Its a fish!!! didnt think this could happen from a fish!!!
any input please?
thanks guys

Generally, 1 gram of EPA is a good dose to test if the stuff will help or not. Generally, with any brain med, you've got to give it 3-4 weeks to fully asses any benefit.

As far as the insomnia, and increased anxiety goes, these are pretty rare side effects.
It is possible, although highly unlikely, that a diet that is too high in fish oil and low in omega 6,s could create imballence of fats the other way, which could cause these side effects.

Make sure that you include other fats in your diet, such as nuts, olive oil, etc, and this is unlikely to occur.
Where this imballence would be likely to occur, is in people who began consuming only
fish oil, and eliminating other oils from the diet. Just give it a try, if you get side effects then reduce the dose. I am a strong believer that the omega 3's should be added to every diet, more for some and less for others.

Well technically anything can cause side effects. Generally they would be considered indirect side effects though.

If you take mega mega-doses of vitamin E (10,000IU), you can theoretically reduce your blood levels of vitamin C, which could cause problems.

Never know till you try.

Dr's Nicolas Perricone and Patricia Kane are great scientists for the study of fatty acids. Patty Kane says that you get outta-whack and have side effects anytime you go after one remedy at 100 miles an hour. Seek balances to reduce side effects. Omega 6's are 4 to 1 ratio to omega 3's. So fish oils and flaxseed oils must be balanced against the nut-meats and the olive oil, with lotsa the latter.

E is an antioxidant and C is both anti and pro. Too much E, and C turns pro-oxidant. Your liver will depleat anyhting in excess, but you can't burn fat when you go 100 miles an hour toward E or other antioxidants. In the winter months when you need to burn fat for normal body heat, you might develop body thermostat problems if you go too heavy on E.
