Good Idea after Hospital visit

Posted by b2chica on March 7, 2014, at 13:25:44

So i gave the basic background information for this incident in the above post...

Short point, been bad the last about 3 or so weeks. Mostly because i am not able to get Brand Zyprexa, (bad luck with three generics) Came to an all time Bad. Was able to go to hospital WITHOUT having to stay overnight.

i wanted to look up the blue pill they gave me to see if it was brand or generic zyprexa. went and looked. i looked at my discharge papers to verify dosage and i noticed something i didn't know last night.
so i received zyprexa 5mg and ativan 1mg, then when didn't work i got 50mg Hydroxizine hcl. when that still didn't really work they gave me a shot.

I told them previously I've only had ativan in the hospital and once as a shot, both times worked great.
so when they gave me the shot i assumed it was ativan... i remember asking and remember they told me. but i apparently was not listening.
they gave me 5mg zyprexa in shot form.

******************************
SO !!!
I didn't realize that zyprexa CAME in shot form... i started looking on line about zyprexa/shot form.
and came across some beautiful information for me.

There is this Beautiful thing called ZYPREXA RELPREVV
it is shot form that lasts either 2 weeks or 4 weeks.
SOOOOOO
if my stupid pharmacy won't cover pills.
if i do shots i THINK this will actually land under my Health insurance coverage which WILL pay for zyprexa....

i need to do more checking. but i feel hopeful.
for now i called pdoc office right away and i can get in monday afternoon, that'f one but i told them i CANT go through this again, i NEED something in the mean time.
She put a rx through to pharmacy for three days of zyprexa 5mg brand.

ok.
SO

*************************
ANYONE with experience with zyprexa relprevv???

THANKS
B2c

>I didn't realize that zyprexa CAME in shot form...

Yes, it comes as two different types of injection.

1. A short-acting injection. This is what you received in the ER. Like the tablets, the effects are intended to last about one day. The injection works more rapidly that the tablets in an emergency, and produces higher blood levels. This injection is used for emergency treatment of severe agitation in schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder or bipolar mania/mixed states.

2. A long-acting depot injection. This injection is given every 2 weeks or every 4 weeks. It is used mainly in schizophrenia for those who do not reliably take tablets. This injection is very expensive and requires the pt to be observed for *three hours* after each injection in a clinic or hospital. This is because there have been occasional reports of loss of consciousness or very low BP after the injection, presumably caused by too much olanzapine being released too quickly. As a result, the depot form of olanzapine is not used unless someone cannot be relied upon to take tablets, and is therefore relapsing into psychosis.

If you cannot get branded Zyprexa tablets covered, it might be worth trying a different generic.

Hope you feel better soon.

Ed sounds like the depot shots are for the non compliant. I had not idea they caused so many side effects. PJ

The Zyprexa depot generally just causes the same side effects as Zyprexa tablets. The 'post injection syndrome' is uncommon, but serious. This is why people need to be observed for 3 hours after each Zyprexa depot.

Zyprexa is the only depot which requires a 3 hour observation period. With other depots antipsychotics, people can go home straight after.

That is a great idea! Z does come in a shot. Expensive, but if that is what it takes.

I'll tell you my trick with generic z is to take a little pot at night, and I am fine the next day. To tell you the truth, ever since on generic zyprexa most of the time in the past 2 years I've been on a little pot at night. I don't do as well with out it,but can still get by.

can't you just double the generic? Or use the generic m tabs? add in low dose perphenazine?

Depot injections scare me. Maybe its because I've had such terrible relationships with some of my ex-shrinks, but I don't want somebody injecting long acting psych meds into me on a regular basis. Unh uh.

with the side effects i've had i'm not that willing to go back on them... i would be willing to try the aurobindo brand maybe with perphenazine... that a good idea. i'll mention it to pdoc and see what she says.

so far, she doesn't seem to be 'getting' what i mean by it hits me hard and fast....

i see her today.
thank b2c

Aurobindo and perphenazine was the original thing I was going to suggest. What brand of perphenazine do you take? I find sandoz to be best for me.
