What To Do If You Fail Physical Theraphy?

Posted by Phillipa on May 23, 2012, at 13:01:22

Well second week of PT for back pain consisisting of osteoarthritis, scoleosis S Curvature Forward & Backward, bone spurs, narrowing of spinal canal, osteoporosis. And To have excercised all my life and still am despite pain be told have no butt muscles or lower abs. I was told if no improvement in three weeks back to spinal neuro surgeon and I don't know what to do. I gave in and took a motrin. Feel so helpless and worked so hard at home on the excercises this week and thought it was better. This is more than depressing. Phillipa

I can give the very highest recommendation for Dr. Ali Bydon, Associate Professor of Neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins, from the personal experience of my husband, who had a back situation very similar to yours. After many years of pain and limited motion, he is now very active and completely pain- free.

I am sorry to hear of this.My mother has spinal stenosis, and had to go thru physical therapy.she also got some kind of injection into her spine, had to be sedated-that injection worked for awhile. She may be getting another one if it gets too bad.She also swears by tumeric(spice).Sprinkles it on alot of her food, says it helps her pain.I hope you can find something to work for you.I did think exercise would help. What were the therapist's suggestions, other than going to neurosurgeon?

Twinleaf did he have to have surgery? As they say will never be the same after. The osteoporosis I think compliments matters. Phillipa

Seriously what did they do to him? So many proceedures but seems fusions are what they use mostly leaved rods and screws forever inside. Like the Tin Man in Wizard of Oz. Phillipa

Three surgeons suggested a fusion, which we felt would probably not help much. Dr Bydon corrected the stenosis, bone spurs, scoliosis and three bulging discs - he's good as new!

No rods or screws involved. This surgeon is amazing; two friends went at our recommendation and both had equally wonderful results.

Twinleaf how were they corrected? Still any pain? I heard $200,000.00 for the fusion at another docs here. I know the guy from Costco. Phillipa

If I know the proceedures used I can google docs here or ask the neurosurgeon here. Google Carolina Neurosurgery And Spine. I'm seeing Dr Dyer. Others do more my type in the practice he would refer me. Babble if you like. Phillipa

The best I can tell you is that he opened the spinal canal and did a lot of bone remodeling. He corrected everything that was wrong. The charge was just what Medicare paid - nothing additional. He is so skilled; we did not find anyone in our home city able to do what he did. You might want to look him up under the Hopkins Spine Center. My husband has not had any pain in the three years since his operation, and his spine is quite flexible. His only limitation is that he is not supposed to lift more than 25 pounds (although sometimes he forgets and lifts quite heavy things). I don't think there are many neurosurgeons as gifted as this one.

I had no idea how terrified I am of this stuff. It was fine to be a nurse and watch others have this stuff done. But putting to your own body is another story. I'd never even get there as terrified. I'd hide under the covers. Here's a link. Phillipa

My husband didn't have the guts to watch those videos - I think they are very hard to watch!. He had superb operative care at Hopkins, though. It's just a good possible solution when you have a complex degenerative disc situation which most surgeons would do a fusion for. This was far better, and really solved the problem.

I think everyone naturally feels quite a lot of fear about any major surgery. I certainly do. But wouldn't you want to carefully consider a procedure which has definite promise of relieving severe chronic pain? I don't mean committing to surgery; I just mean getting an opinion about your MRI findings. I think, if you live at a distance, you can get a consultation with the Hopkins Spine center surgeons by sending your MRI and a doctor's report; you don't actually have to go there. It would be interesting to see what two different surgeons suggest; I think more than one opinion always helps a lot in educating us about our physical conditions.

Twinleaf gave the site also to a man who had a bone spur large on removed from his esophagus not he has nerve damage and may never be able to eat again. And to beat it all tonight first have seen him out in months I said they take medicaire. Since this man worked for the Pentagon for years, and his wife was a high powered executive. I said since the now neurologist said it's nerve damage from the spur surgery and the surgeon hasn't admitted it. He should sue as he has a case Irreversible damage. He said I don't want to I have more money than I need. Moral money can't buy your health or happiness. Phillipa

^^^^Sorry I'm late Phillipa! Accupuncture kicks a**!!! It's amazing! It is definitely no "voodoo magic"!

I had it for migraines and it worked miraculously!
However, It may not be a permanent fix for physical deformities. I would liken it to a good massage, as it provides a relaxing and conduit of "chi" or "flow" (in western words, relaxation of afflicted areas.)

I'm not sure I explained that correctly but, it it definitely provided me relief from severe tension migraines.

Keep at it Phillipa! You have always been an inspiration to me!

Kind regards

Somehow I missed this post. I'd have ever intention of having first repeats of MRI's done a year ago. Then definitely let them send MRI's to Hopkins. I've been researching also seems that first must do PT, then see Surgeon again, then if the osteoporosis I know I have it says many sites that first treatment of osteoporosis needs to take place. But one thing said it calcium also. And been on it for years with magnesium. As for weight bearing excercises having been a jogger til mid 50's actually longer evidently weight bearing excercise should have prevented it and didn't. Also age of patient taken into consideration. And general health. Many back surgeries leave a patient in worse shape than before. Odds must be weighed very carefully. I need to be active. Phillipa
