Pristiq vs. Effexor effectiveness

Posted by uncouth on February 7, 2009, at 11:21:55

Anyone had experience with both Pristiq and Effexor? Looking for comments in terms of effectiveness, and length of time before you felt an effect.

So far I'm at 100mg of Pristiq, doesn't feel as effective as 300mg of Effexor, and EFfexor always kicked in within 2 weeks. I'm at 2.5 on Pristiq and I still feel like sh*t.

Any help would be appreciated. I'm really struggling here :(

I could well be wrong - and I apologise if I am - but I would have thought Pristiq is as effective as Effexor, with lower doses of Pristiq doing the same job as higher doses of Effexor.

Effexor is venlafaxine and Pristiq is the metabolite of venlafaxine (desvenlafaxine) (as escitalopram is to citalopram). I'm not a pharmacologist, but surely this is the case..?

I have no experience with Pristiq, but I do remember seeing some comments (don't remember where) suggesting that it's just another shameless patent extension designed to keep people paying money for a branded drug instead of switching to a comparable generic. I think that's a bit too cynical, but I also think that if Effexor worked before, why not stick with it? Is there a particular reason you decided to switch?
