300mg of Lithium for Depression

Posted by kevinj909 on September 26, 2008, at 0:05:48

hey all...

My doc has recently suggested that I start taking Lithium for my Depression. He's recommending that I start at 150 and move to 300 soon after. Has anyone tried Lithium at 300mg? Any luck? Any side effects?

Thanks in advance,

k

I would just like to comment that your doctor knows what he is doing. The range of dosages for lithium when used as an adjunct medication to treat unipolar depression is 300-600mg.

Li helped me, but not as much as I needed it to. It is worth a try. It is a good drug. Make sure your pdoc montiors your blood levels of the drug. 300 might not be in the therapeutic range (Li has a very specific range recommended for augmentation). Everyone is different, but I take 600 to keep me in the therapeutic range.

Good luck.

Best,
EE

Hi EE.

Actually, there is no established therapeutic blood levels for lithium when it is used for unipolar depression - unlike in bipolar disorder. One usually needs significantly less lithium to treat unipolar depression than what is used to treat bipolar disorder. Some studies at Harvard indicate that 300-600mg is effective.

I thought Lithium was for "manic-depressive" depression (Bipolar).

This is hard to think about post.

Well, I'll be darned. Now that you mention it, I can't find any specific blood level for augmentation. However, my old pdoc had a very specific idea about the range that she wanted me to be in (of course I can't remember what that range was). When I see my new pdoc next month, I'll ask if he is aware of any literature on the topic.

Best,
EE
