Genetic tests available and on the horizon

Posted by johnnyj on March 24, 2007, at 9:54:46

Sorry if this has been discussed but I was wondering what people think? Are these any good? I would like this to become a good discussion as there are many things to consider.

Currently, one available from the mayo clinic for depression.

I think the mayo clinic version is US 650.00. I spent that in my emergency room visits and wasted time and money is testing different meds. Insurance should pay it would save them a lot of money in the long run.

These sorts of things make me panic. Even if it could be a huge leap in science. Maybe i've read Brave New World too many times...

Yes, you have read it too many times lol. At least we can prove that something is going on that we probably can't control. For me, the more science the better. I just wonder if any of the tests could have prevented the devastating effects that akathisia had on me. I now completely understand why someone would end it after that experience. The emergency room had no clue that was what was happening even after charging me 25 bucks for 4 asprin. What a joke.

I was hoping to stimulate some of the science guys on here to see what they think of such tests.

The first one is not a test for depression but shows which persons have genetic factors that might render SSRI's less ineffective or have high side effect rates. It does not identify which will work for a persons specific case or diagnose what kind of depression they have. From the website:
"It provides unique information relating to drug response: side effect and compliance".

I think these kind of tests will be used quite a bit in the future once they become afforadable.
I am hearing they cost approx. $20,000 today.
CYP450 is just one of many isoenzymes that effect how a drug is metabolized. Once one can test for many isoenzymes and we have more complete information on how specific drugs are metabolized
these kind of tests could help guide med choices for all kinds of conditions.

Well there is where research money should go why should people have to suffer so and lose their lives and jobs with worthless meds? Love Phillipa

They've been doing this in the cancer field for year. Physicians can biopsy your tumor or your genotype your blood and, in some cancers, tailor chemotherapy for you.

It's a new approach to medicine for sure. Personally, I like it.
