DBS Appointment with all the movers and shakers!!!

Posted by bipolarspectrum on August 18, 2005, at 5:29:09

Hi,
I have a appointment regarding Deep Brain Stimulation next week with all the authors in the recent DBS study.. I'm kinda scared, I never thought it would actually happen! Of course, theres still more red tape to go through, but I'm onto the first step! I'll keep u guys posted..

Good luck!

I'd be curious to know if there is a depressive subtype that has been identified as yielding better results.

Hey,
I really wonder whether there is a subtype of depression that responds better to DBS.. In the one DBS study, it appeared that melancholic subtype responded... It also seems that theres a structural and functional difference between unipolar and bipolar depressives... I'm concerned that, because of my antidepressant-induced manias, my brain will be of the bipolar type.. I hope they will take an MRI first to determine this (if this is even possible)...

Me too, on the 23rd I'm seeing Helen Mayberg and that Antonio S Surgeon at Toronto Western. I'll be number ten if approved. Keep me updated and I'll keep you updated. It seems from my past interviews with Sidney Kennedy that their looking for the melancholic subtype of unipolar, as far as bipolar goes I have no idea.

Hello,
I met with the lead authors for Deep Brain Stimulation today... they were all very nice... Since I seem to have some bipolar traits, there not sure I will be a candidate... there waiting for the lead pdoc to come back from abroad to make the final decision regarding me... but its very exciting, and the excitement of the DBS authors is contagious!

Hi,

When do they intend performing the operation if you do get on the study?

Also, do they have any ideas on why two of the participants from the Canada study failed to respond? And how do you know if you suffer from melancholic depression as opposed to melancholic depression?

Hi,

According to the study, I quote

"the researchers implanted the array of electrodes in a region called the "subgenual cingulate region," which their earlier studies had indicated to be overactive in treatment-resistant depression"

Does this mean that will do a scan prior to performing the implant to make sure that whoever they're doing an implant on does have an overactive subgenual cingulate region?

Hi Denise,
If you get into the study, I believe they do the operation in a couple weeks.... I have no idea why 2 of the 6 were non-responders, and i know the researchers dont know either... I believe ur asking about the difference between atypical and melancholic depression... well, atypical is oversleeping, overeating, fluctuating in mood and one more i cant forget.. melanholic is the opposite... As I assume your american denise, I believe they are investigating DBS in Boston..

Hi BPS,

No I'm not from America, I'm from the UK, I just wanted to get an idea of when we would be seeing some results. Hopefully in a month or so then?

I heard they were planning on doing a study here in the UK in Bristol, I've written to the Doctor but have yet to hear a response so don't know what's going on.

Thanks for the info re atypical depression verses melancholic.

Hi Bipolarspectrum,

Just wondering what happened with the DBS, did you decide to go for it in the end.

Forgive me if I've already asked you this before but I can be very forgetful.

Kind Regards...Denise

Hi Denise,
I never did end up going for it.. they offered it to me aas patient 13... they are now at 16 and having great success, a 75% success rate.. although the sample size is small... i know although neurosurgeons are learning the techniques and looking to setup shop in other western countries such as france and australia... in america, i believe there DBS practicioners in Florida.. anywayz, its getting lots of press here in canada and seems to be helping quite a few people!
