I'm currently starting on my first trial of a tricyclic AD. I've tried most SSRI's (and others) with mixed results and after a lot of research decided to give Desipramine a try. I'd be very interested in hearing any experiences people have had with this med.

I haven't tried desipramine but I have taken lofepramine, a similar tricyclic which is metabolised to desipramine. I found lofepramine somewhat effective for depression. It was very tolerable. It caused (me) no sexual side effects, no sedation, no weight gain and no apathy. It caused increased sweating, increased heart rate, flushing and mild urinary hesitancy.

Yes, I did try this med many years ago when I was severely depressed. I took as much as 325 mg per day. The usual top dose is 300. However, even at 325 we couldn't get my blood level high enough. I had problems with cold hands, dizziness, etc. I did NOT feel good on this med. And unfortunately, it did not help.

I found it pretty helpful, although it didn't completely get me back to 100% well. Are you using it alone or with an SSRI? I use it along with Lexapro (also Neurontin, Ambien, and Dexedrine). Side-effect-wise I mostly had problems with dry mouth and dizziness upon standing. The higher the dose, the more side effects. However, they weren't so bad that I wanted to stop taking it.

Actually I switched from Lexapro to Desipramine. I couldn't take the side effects from anything higher than 5mg lexapro (most disturbing were night sweats). I've only been on Desipramine for 2 weeks and side effect wise I've experienced some increased heart rate, dizzyness, and sexual side effects - decrease of libido and even pleasure. There has been no antidepressant effect yet and so far I'd say Lexapro is a superior med... but I know it's still early. What is your dosage of Lexapro and Desipramine? I'm currently on 75mg and will go up to 100mg this week.

It made me lactate. :-( But I am a freak so don't go by me. And if you are male you would get ... little breasts! But you aren't going to because it's pretty rare for this med.
I hope you have success.

Right now I take 125 of Desipramine. I was up to about 180, but then I added in the Dexedrine and I had problems with a racing heart, so I dropped back down. I also take 40mg of Lex. I seem to be a person who needs a lot of a drug to make a difference. Pdocs can draw blood levels of desipramine, so that can be helpful in figuring out if you should add more.
