remeron to trazodone

Posted by shadowmon on July 29, 2004, at 23:21:43

Remeron helped me while I was on an anti depressant (lexapro) that didnt work for me. It helped me to eat and to sleep. I slept a lot and I think it messed up my internal clock. I was taking remeron 40 mg. Now, seeing that I am back on the original antidepressant that I have had success with (paxil 40 mg and trazodone 50 mg for sleep) the Dr. is putting me back on my original dosage of the trazodone for sleep. I took it for the first time yesterday and I couldnt sleep at all. nothing, not even tired.

The remeron kind of made me sleep all day and now I wonder if my sleep clock is all messed up in my body?

I have tried taking the medicine earlier so that I get drowsy or something, but it never makes me drowsy. I also know that I probably shouldnt eat, but I get hungry, what can I do to get myself back to a normal (waking before noon) schedule?

Hi:
When did you stop taking 'Trazodone' 50 mg. for sleep? More than three months or longer?

In my knowledge, ... the second time around such as yours, the effectiveness/efficacy of Trazodone might have COMPLETELY ceased on your system. In other words, your system does NOT respond the Trazodone's effectiveness any longer.
Once the Trazodone' was a 'Miracle' sleeping-aid for you, however, now it might have NO effectiveness in your system. Absolutely, nothing at all?

A good example is 'Lithium.' Once stopped the Lithium, the second time around, it does NEVER work on you. Then, you need to be EXTRA cautious before switching another/new psycho.med.

Hopefully, your pdoc. prescribes another 'New' sleep-aid for you soon.
H.G.

Your problem is rebound insomnia as Remeron is a powerfull antihistamine & traz isn't. To get yourself sleeping on traz only you are going to have to ween off of Remeron. Take 50mg of Traz as you use to & take half of your Remeron dosage for a few days & then a quarter for another few days.

Alternately, drop Remeron cold as you have done, take 50mg of traz & take a benzo sedative for a few days, Restoril or Halcion are good benzos for short term sleep problems. Restoril if you have trouble staying asleep, Halcion if you have trouble getting to sleep.

Cheers,
Panda.
