Thanks Jemma. Did you experience upset tummy and dizzyness. I am finding this hard to take. I took 200 mg an hour before my 20mg adderall and my head in really dizzy.

I take 100 mg of provigil first thing in the morning, then the other 100mg around noon. That way, I find I avoid any headache or spaciness. I also take it with food - it slows down the absorption rate a little, but the ultimate effect is the same and it's a more gradual, easy-on-the-tummy process. Also, one reason I love provigil is that if you find it too much, you can just cut back the dose without any withdrawal. In fact, one day a week, I skip it so I can have a nice long sleep-in.

best of luck -

Jemma

thanks, Jemma. I will try with food again and split the dose. My tummy is upset again today. Seems like about an hour after I eat. I wonder if my adderall is starting to upset my tummy. I take it with 40 mg prilosec, on an empty stomach. I think I will have a no med day tomorrow to see if that helps. thanks for your post :)
p.s. did it bum you out at first?

I have had sleep apnea for 6 years now and although I sleep with a CPAP machine, I was still very tired at work. My sleep doctor prescribed Provigil and WOW! I feel like a new man. I am wide awake during the day and have no problems sleeping at night. In fact, since starting with this drug I tend to sleep longer in the morning which is good.

It did take some time to get the dosage to a point that worked for me, but once I got there I was hooked! I take half a pill in the morning and half at lunch which is a total of 200mg.

I have heard of people taking up to 600mg a day! I think I would crawl out of my skin! LOL!!

Hope this helps!

Thanks, Ravenwitch. Thats kind of what I am doing now. Did provigil upset your stomach at first. I have been taking it with food...which seems to help, but slows down response time by an hour.
Thanks for your input

Blondegirl,

Yes it did and still sometimes does upset my stomach. My sleep doctor told me to take it as needed, so somedays if I know I will just be laying around the house watching movies or something I don't even bother.

But as far as the stomach thing is concerned, that is one of the more common side effects. I would have to assume as with any other med that the side effects will wear off with time.

Hope I helped a bit!

Thanks again Ravenwitch. Your info has been very helpful. I can't remember if I asked you if you take it with food?

The tummy thing is getting better, but I'm still not sure this stuff is worth 40 bucks a month.

Any ideas on why you can't drink alchol on the same day you take provogil?

Have a great day

I always eat something before taking any kind of medication. Just a habit I got into.

As far as the alchohol is concerned, the company that makes Provigil has not tested enough to know the implications. I have had a beer or two while taking Provigil and the only thing I noticed was a killer headache the next day.

My friend takes it as well and parties constantly without any problems. I guess each person is different?

Hey,

I haven't tried Provigil (it's on my wish list along with Xyrem of trying to enter Superman status).

But I do take Desoxyn, which often hurts my tummy. When it does, I use Zantac 75. Ask your PHARMACIST first, but it should do the trick, and it's over the counter.

Thanks utopizen, I take 40 mg prilosec with my meds. The upset tummy thing is getting better. I would definitly ask the doc for samples before spending money on this stuff.

How did you get your pdoc to give you Desoxyn, mine didn't think it was a good idea at all.

He tried all the others, Dexedrine, Ritalin, Adderall. They all made me very anxious or in the case of Dexedrine made my heart beat fast. So he switched me to Desoxyn.

Unfortunately, most doctors can't spell Desoxyn. And I'm saying most psychiatrists too.

Unfortunately, I'm out of state for three months, and for the past 2 months it's been given me depression when it wears off at the end of the day. I'm seeing a psychiatrist who I had to literally spell Desoxyn to, but then gives ME the condencending look when I ask to switch to Dex spansules. Um, hello, meth has MORE abuse potential, moron.

I know what you mean. I just asked my doc about dex spansules, I have read that it is much smoother than taking dexedrine tablets, which I didn't like at all.

Dextrostat worked for quite a while then kind of burned out for me.

I can't decide if this provigil is working or not. It almost seems that it makes me tired, but I seem to do less procrastinating.

Adderall doesn't seem to help with procrastinating, I can lay in bed while my mind thinks of all of the things I should be doing. :)

I guess a little self parenting might be in order :)

thanks for your post

Have a great day

Hi blondegirl -

Provigil never bummed me out. At first, I didn't really notice anything except that it was easier to stay awake. Then, about two weeks in, I found myself sorting my kitchen cupboards for the first time in years. About two weeks after that, a low-grade depression that had been plaguing me for months just seemed to lift. It's called a mood-brightener, and that's exactly what it does for me.

Good luck -

Jemma

Hi Jemma, thank for the hope. I will keep taking it for a while longer. Today I am a little dizzy I probably took it too close to my adderall xr. I hope it does turn into a mood brightener...I could use a little brightening :)

I made the mistake of taking it too late the other night and yes it does keep you awake:)

I started taking 50 mg today after being off 2 or 3 days. How long do you think that will last. I took it 2 hours ago...I felt good for a little while, but now I am sleepy again.

Both sick to your stomach and dizziness are common side effects of Provigil. Nothing but time helped the dizziness for me (but now it is all gone). Eating first and taking Ginger Capsules (from your health food store) helped the nausea for me.

Good luck!

I've been taking Provigil since January 2003 at a 400mg a day dosage. In July, my doctor increased the dosage to 800mg. I'm curious to know if anyone has experience with a dosage of this level. My insurance company will not approve over 400mg per day and is asking for documentation that shows the effectiveness at higher doseages. My doctor seems to be quick to prescribe the higher dosages and tells me that my next step is Social Security Disability! It seems to me that after only six months of treatment for my narcolepsy, that that is my only option. Does anyone have any similar experience?

Thanks for any help,

LarryinMI

IMHO your pdoc is wrong. My limited understanding is you start with provigil, if it doesn't work you move on to real stimulants.
I was taking provigil for ADD, and it made me tired and upset my stomach. When the upset tummy went away I was wanting to eat all of the time. I would get a second opinion. Provigil is one of the most expensive medications you can take its no wonder your insurance agency is bauking. Hope this helps.

Provigil - My Posative Experience

Posted by Clayton on October 30, 2003, at 12:09:25

In reply to provigil, posted by blondegirl47 on July 7, 2003, at 12:48:24

I was first seduced by the claims that this expensive drug was a cognitive enhancer. My memory, focus and concentration were all suffering. (I am 52 and just a little worried about slowing mental function since my job unrelentingly demands all my intellectual skills on demand).

It worked. My memory improved tremendously. I regained the abiliy to concentrate and focus at very deep levels. I could shift concentration between disparate tasks with intense focus on demand. And I didn't forget what I was I'd been thinking in previous tasks that often were often disrupted without warning.

But guess what? I suffer from depression, stress-related axiety disorder and a lack of drive and motivation. My drive has picked up tremendously.
My depression is significantly improved. (Depression is treated with Paxil and Remaron with limited success. The Remaron made an impreovement because it brought norepinephine into play. I speculate that the Provigil augments the norepinephine function.). My mood improved. My stress levels are way down.

Also suffer from SAD. My soial interactions and assertiveness are vastly improved.

I spend alot of time looking at boards where users (unscientifically) evaluate the success of various approaches to dealing with their problems. Provigil is ranked at or near the top for stress and depression.

This stuff is hard to afford but worth it. I hope it doesn't poop out.

And a bonus effect: Coping with sleep deprivation. When I am frequently sleep deprived, even severely, the Provigil vanquishes the symptoms. I have used it to stay up all night when I had to read technical literature. Alternately, I have taken it and been able to fall asleep without problem, as opportunity presents.

Sores in the mouth are usually from your stomach being to acidic or sour. You might need to drink more water and or take antacid. I am not sure how the antacid will effect your provigil.
