Has anyone had good experience with an AD that didn't swing a BP into a manic phase? Is there such a thing? My daughter (16) was put on prozac and later on lexapro to counter the depression which is horrible. But, had to discontinue each time due to mania returning. Thanks

Don't quote me on this, but I THINK that the older tricyclics (TCA's) may have avoided mania - such as Elavil (amitryptiline), nortryptiline. I was on that for about a year with NO hypomania. (I have BiPolar2, the so-called milder version of BP)

There are some bipolars who are especially sensitive to SSRI-induced manic switches exclusively. Try a different class of med, such as a TCA (as Janelle mentioned), or an MAOI, or Wellbutrin, etc.

ALL AD's cause mania in BP ! If needed, they require a counter agent, such as a mood stabilizer
to not cause mania.

one more thought,,,
sometime ad's are really pushed until the "depression" is somewhat controlled,
the stabilzer may come after,,,you need to really know the pdocs game plan,,if he(she) is experimenting with her,,mabe due to the effect that some pdocs treats symtoms not the illness..
.
do not forget to "listen".
i would rather be manic,,or horribly suicidle than sedated so i couldnt feel...

Wellbutrin (bupropion) seems to be less apt to cause mania than other antidepressants, and is often chosen first when treating bipolar depression. It might make sense to be on Depakote to help as a mood stabilizer.
