Buspar stories (w/ dose) wanted and more, please

Posted by Janelle on May 10, 2003, at 21:34:29

I was on Buspar (titrated up to 60 mg/day which was too much, backed down to 45mg/day, then 30mg/day, then 15mg/night) and had heard that it is very weak, like a placebo, etc. Since I'm on quite a few meds and feel like someone here aptly described "a walking drug store" my pdoc tapered me off the Buspar.

Well, I don't think it's all that weak or a placebo. Since being off it, my anxiety has risen and I don't fall asleep as easily at night.

I'm also on Klonopin BUT I've been on that for like 10 years and I think I've habituated to it.

I want to go back on the 15mg/night of Buspar and then work with my pdoc on tweaking (reducing, possibly getting rid of) the Klonopin.

Any feedback, comments greatly appreciated.

I think Buspar can have striking effects for many people, especially if you are taking other meds that have a good "synergy" with Buspar. I had some very positive results with just 5-10mg of Buspar added to a tiny dose of Celexa (2.5mg/day), in the past. However, if I upped the Buspar above 10mg I got very irritable. Less than 5mg didn't do anything, so 7.5mg/day (divided) worked the best for me with a little Celexa. Without the SSRI, however, it seemed to make things worse.

Hi Janelle

My experiences were the same as Ritch's. Buspar is fantastic as an augmentor with other meds, but perhaps less interesting on its own because it is useless for panic and depression. However, I think there is really nothing that beats Buspar for generalized anxiety. Its value over benzos is that it is relatively easy to withdraw from and you can have a drink now and then without passing out. I think the reason the drug gets a bad rap is because it is not as nuanced nor as comprehensive a drug as ssris are - it just subtely removes any anticipatory anxiety without really boosting mood.

One thing: if you were only taking it once a day, you might have not experienced its full effects. Better to take it two or three times a day, with the doses spaced out.
Best of luck,
jflange (Buspar, 10mgs/day - with Zoloft)
