Hi Folks,
I have gone through several trials of stim Meds for ADD.We finally settled on Dexedrine. It works great and does my over-all condition best of the other trials(Provogil,Ritalin,Adderrall). There is one thing, though, that I got with trying ALL these meds...everyone caused me dry-mouth.After 3-4 days into each trial,I would develop white sore spots on my tongue. At first,I figured it was the med,but in the next trial, the same thing happened. It did it on all 4 meds! The Dex works wonders and I,m scared I won,t be able to continue therapy if these tongue ulcers or whatever they are, can,t be controlled.Anyone ever experience this sorta thing? I sure do need some ideas or advice. Festus

I have also been bothered by severe dry throat (feels different than dry mouth) and mouth ulcers from stimulants.
For me, Adderall was by far the worst, dex much milder, no problem at all from Ritalin.
It's weird, because they list so many obscure side effects in the drug monographs, but not mouth ulcers.
Have you stopped taking any meds recently? I notice that if I reduce or stop Prozac, I get a very bad sore throat and lots of mouth ulcers. Again, I don't know how Prozac withdrawal (officially, there is not supposed to be any Prozac withdrawal) could cause sore throat and ulcers.
A health food product called DGL (it stands for de - ???ized - licorice helps mine, but they put sorbitol in it, which gives me bad GI upset.

Yes, stims give me mouth ulcers too, made worse by the mouth guard I have to wear for stim-induced teeth-grinding at night. I find that switching my toothpaste to Biotene helps a lot - regular toothpaste has some ingredients that make mouth ulcers worse. And Biotene also treats mouth dryness and the bacterial problems that can result.

L-lysine has helped heal a variety of oral soft tissue injuries for me. I take it PRN, a 500 mg. tab every a.m. until the problem resolves. (My brother takes 1000 mg./day as a prophylaxis with no ill effects, but he's 6'7" and a bit more sensitive to oral pain than I.) Unfortunately, it's not a quick fix, but I can count on some improvement by the 3rd day and complete healing in a week.
Hope this helps.---medlib
PS--I haven't heard that L-lysine offers any relief from dry mouth. If anyone finds something that helps with that, please post it!

After I saw in the replies that others get these sores from stims,it makes me a bit more sure that that,s where mine are comin from.I have not switched or stopped any meds lately, but they get so bad that every few weeks,I,ll stop the Dex for a week to make them go away. After a day or 2,they do go away.As soon as I start back on it,BAM,the sores come back.I figured someone here would have some ideas,I,ll try the L-lysine.Is the Biotene OTC?Thanks, guys! My husband gets mouth ulcers - not from meds but if he is stressed out. He has not found L-Lysine to be of much help, although some people say it works wonders. The one thing he definitely has seen work is avoiding all nuts. They seem to aggravate the situation. My son gets them as well if he eats peanut butter more than once in a few days.

Yes, Biotene is in the toothpaste section of any large drugstore.

I know this sounds pretty simplistic, but I've spent a lifetime with mouthsores bad enough to go to my doctor over. One thing that seems to kick the sores everytime is original Listerine. It's nasty tasting, but swish that stuff a couple of times a day, and you might find relief.

Try Arm & Hammer Baking Soda toothpaste (the classic kind, not the others with peroxide etc in them!).
The base ph of the baking soda is good for both killing bacteria and countering acidity that may result from stim-induced acidosis.
