Zyprexa, sleep and food

Posted by Abajo on October 10, 2001, at 0:55:37

I started zyprexa about a month ago. I was warned about the weight gain, but I never imagined I could feel so hungry after waking up from sleeping. It's ridiculous. I wake up and head strait to the kitchen. I have no control over this. What in the heck do others on this drug do to control your hunger? I have never been a fan of sweets, but now they are all I want. This drug seems to do what the doctors wanted it to do, allow me to sleep for at least 8 hours and reduce my daytime anxiety. But I can't seem to eat enough. I can see eating myself right into an eating disorder on this drug. Anyone have any tips?

Unfortunately I can't make the hunger or craving go away. The only thing you can do is try to eat smarter. I've replaced the M&M's with baby carrots and celery sticks. I drink at least 8 glasses of water a day which can help curb your appetite.

The other way to go (which I wouldn't suggest as the best way ) is to look at the OTC dietary appetite suppressants. I've tried them in the past for other reasons but not specifically for the Zyprexa Munchies Syndrome. They can be a little help.

After starting the Zyprexa, I gained about 45 lbs. I went absolutely carb crazy. They says that the appetite increase wears off after awhile but that hasn't been the case for me. Chris is right, you have to eat smarter. Try to avoid foods that take a long time to metabolize in your system. I eat a very light breakfast, usually skip lunch and try to eat a healthy dinner. I also do a lot of walking in my job and try to make sure that I take a walk every night after dinner. Exercise is important. I've managed to lose about 20 lbs in the last 5 weeks.

I wish you luck with the Zyprexa, it's a great med. But it definitely has it's drawbacks.

Just exercise. It's the answer to any weight gain. Even if you eat more carbs, you can work them off. Either step up your current exercise program or start one. Fast paced walking and some strength training is the best combo for staving off AD weight gain.

I'm on zyprexa/neurontin. I ran 6 miles a day at 10min/mile for a week. I still gained weight that week. almost 5 lbs. I continue to run 6miles 5 days a week. I have gained 20 lbs in the first month. I'm thinking about asking my doc. to put me on topamax to block weight gain. Is this is viable solution?
