Started on lamictal 2 weeks ago. Have been up to 50mgs the last couple of days. Started getting headaches at the end of the 25mg dose period. The headaches continued and got worse with 50 mgs. I called my doc and he just said to stop the lamictal and see if the headaches go away. I guess I expected more advice from him, like "this is a transient side effect so take it slow and stay on it." But no just stop the med. I know headaches are common with lamictal, but wouldn't it be better to have tried to stay with the lamictal, or if headaches do occur with the drug, is it always an ongoing problem. The doc only gave me 30 seconds. The ass really cut me off on this, when he knows I feel like shit. I think psychiatrists should have to do both pharmacotherapy and talk therapy both, so we wouldn't get blown off so easily....TR

Hi Ted,
Instead of stopping, why don't you go up slower- like 12.5mg/week. I also had headaches at 50- went back down to 25 for a week, then 37.5, etc. I couldn't agree more with seeing a shrink who does meds and therapy. Is that an option for you? Take care, Judy

---This is good advice; also, don't fixate on reaching a certain "normal" dose. I'm only taking 12.5mg. a day, and I can feel the effect. BTW, are you taking Depekene/Depekote (valproic acid)? I am, and my pdoc says that may be making me hypersensitive to the Lamictal. Or maybe I'm just strange; haven't ruled that out yet. ;)

> The doc was just an asshole, I called him back and asked why he had been so GD abrupt. He said to just take the xanax in whatever amount I needed until I see him next week. I believe you are right in staying on a lower dose or backing down a notch until possible transient effects go away. I am going to run this by the ass next week rather than cop out to another drug suggestion from this therapeutic genious...Thanks...Ted

My 1st psychiatrist was really big into
psychotherapy (I didn't know at the time that
most psychiatrists primarily focus on meds).
Anyways, he thought that therapy was the best
solution for me and said that meds were just a
crutch. I told him that therapy is a good
idea and I wanted to do it, but it is a
long process and I may need meds so that my life
doesn't crumble around me in the mean time.
He would prescribe meds, but he *refused* to
talk to me about my responses to the meds.
Anyways, I learned a lot about psychopharmacology
and indirectly quized him on some simple
issues, and he didn't know some really easy
questions. Then I new why he was so focused
on therapy. So it can go both ways. I think
my experience was unique.-john
