Sorry about that Cam. I just thought you could probably answer this one as well as the ladies. I was wondering if AD's or benzo's interfere with or interact with birthcontrol pills or vice versa? I'm about to start BC pills again and I'm unsure what to expect. Last time, they made me so ill I had to get off them. Is this common, do you know? Any and all responses from anyone would be very much appreciated.
Thanks everyone!! Hugs--Tina

Tina - There should be no problem taking BCPs with benzodiazepines. There can be some enzyme inhibition with BCPs, possibly resulting in an increase in benzodiazepine effect. This is probably not clinically significant, or if it is you would just have to reduce the benzo dose.
The benzo/BCP interaction really only involves benzos that undergo oxidation reactions when they are metabolized (eg. chlordiazepoxide, clorazepate, diazepam, flurazepam, alprazolam, midazolam and triazolam). Klonopin should be safe.
•Remember, you must use alternate forms of birth control for the first 3 months after starting BCPs. You are not fully protected during this time.•
Hope this is what you want. - Cam
(Hey, during puberty I always liked sitting with the girls in assembly after being punished by a teacher. This seemed to reinforce my disruptive behavior, though.)....8^)

I think nausea is a common reaction to BC pills. I think it has something to do with the body reacting to the hormones as if you were pregnant. But that may be false info. I had to get off BC pills a couple of months ago because of my blood pressure rising. Now I'm on a lower dose HRT and I think its making me feel alittle queasy, kind of the way I felt when I was pregnant. I took Papaya Enzyme (which is available OTC in vitamin departments) and it really helped my stomach calm down. So I have started doing that again and it works. Also, never letting your stomach go empty, eat smaller meals throughout the day.I hope I'm not too off target with my response. You didn't specify how the BCP made you sick, so I assumed it was nausea.
Hope this helps.

Tina,
I take generic Klonopin (1.5 mg. per day) and a low-dose estrogen-progesterone contraceptive. This is my second month, and I haven't had any problems nor side effects from it (Mircette), except maybe a small decrease in libido (which seems to be coming back) and a slight increase in breast size ;-). I haven't gained any weight, but I'm working out to lose a few pounds. I also have increased energy, softer and clearer skin, and fewer mood swings. So far so good ... good luck with yours. Hope you have better luck this time around.

I just restarted provigil today--at a very low dose. I am also experiencing depression pretty badly and would like to go up higher, but last time I got really nauseated. I wonder if papaya enzyme would help with the side effects of provigil. I never heard of it before. shellie

Tina, FYI Did you know that anti-biotics can interfere with birth control pills, so you should use something with the BCP's when on anti-biotics? Then you have to wait a certain amount of time for the BCP's to start working again. CarolAnn

hey Tina!!
I've been on BCP's for about 11 years now, and have found onhe that suits me and my body. I've never had any problems with this one (Microgynon in UK) even though I think my body has tried!!! I'm actuallyt oo scared to off them now... it's so nice being able to plan when my period will arrive, and skip one if I'm having a bad time generally.
cam - 3 months??? All the ones I've been on, they say 2 weeks before they reach effectiveness... and then if on Antibiotics / miss one, wait 7 - 14 days (some pills have differences here)....
Unfortunately, doe to certain problems, my husband can't wear a condom, so it's BCP all the way for us!!!

Never know. I can't hurt. I sure was nauseated during my 2nd pregnancy. Good luck.

Nikki (there is something so seductive about that x) - Anyway, the rule of thumb with BCPs is that they begin to work within the 1st week, but during this time an alternate method of contraception should also be used.My last posting said 3 months before full protection and this harkens back to my college days in the late 1970s. I asked my wife about this (a public health nurse) and they still go by the 3 month rule. Perhaps it has something to do with hormonal adjustments, but more likely has to do with "old habits die hard". I don't know.
Sorry for the confusion - Cam xxx 8^)
