I need to change my med cocktail somewhat--this one not working enough: effexor xr 375; synthroid and cytomel; ritalin sr 20 mg 2x/day; and serzone 225 in the evening.
One thought is to add buspar and eventually lower the effexor. I have heard buspar is mediocre as an anti-anxiety, but one doc I have consulted says he has seen good results with it as an AD augmenter.
I looked for some research on it, and found nothing. Any thoughts?

Hi Noa,
I respond to every medication I've tried except Buspar. Of course, we're all different, but Buspar for me was like a sugar pill. No benefit/no side effects. There is no harm in trying it. I believe since I've been on psycho-babble, I only remember one woman saying it helped her. Funny I rarely even see a post about it. Hopefully some will follow mine for you,
Janice

Noa,
In summary of my overly-lengthy post prior to this one, I would suggest considering all the stimulants and a few antipsychotics. One to two weeks each. I would look at things like Buspar only after exhausting those different classes of meds. Buspar is just too much in the same ballpark as other things you've tried. And unlike the stimulants and antipsychotics, it will take weeks for it to work and judge effectiveness. With stimulants and antipsychotics, there is a very real definite potential of experiencing fast results. At this point in the game, that's what we need, right? I think it makes sense to look into unexplored categories at this point. Forget Buspar for now. There are other things that make a lot more sense to me. :-) JohnL

I'm sure they are out there but I don't know anybody personally who has been helped by Buspar. I took it at one point and felt NOTHING. After my father died 2years ago my sister was given Buspar to get through the grief and it didn't help her (and she's a real light weight when it comes to meds).
I agree with JohnL about trying something like Zyprexa or Risperdol. Maybe even Naltrexone? I know they have helped me. It can't be any worse than you currently are.

I have heard buspar is mediocre as an anti-anxiety,
-----------------------------------
First, everyone is different and my reactions to drugs are not always typical. That being said, when I took buspar my pulse was racing and I thought I was having a heart attack. Talk about a major panic attack. I called the doc and he told me to take a valium and stop the buspar. I thought I was going to die.I don't know who makes buspar but if you can find out, go to the manufacturer's website. You can probably find some more objective info there.
Good luck

Noa,
I took BuSpar for anxiety first after being dianosed and it did nothing for me. My new doc calls it "The World's Most Expensive Placebo". I've read where it has helped some people, but they are far and few between. I was changed over to Xanex which has been very helpful for me. The drawback to that is that Xanex is VERY strong and takes me out of the ballgame when I take more than a 1/2mg. It is also highly addictive when taken regularly for more than a couple of months. There must be a middle ground out there for you. I wish I had more info for you, but I'm still relatively new to the game. Hope this helps.Peace,

Buspar has worked very well for me in combination with Serzone for two or three years now. I found it a very powerful drug - everybody's experience is different! For me, Serzone relieves my underlying depression while the Buspar seems to somehow unlock my energy.
I thought it was a peculiar combination of drugs when I first started on it, but have since found quite a few people (some who've posted earlier in this group) for whom it has worked well. Moreover it is about as free from risk of addiction / withdrawal problems as any drug I know - and I've been there, too!

I am glad to hear that, Tony, as such anecdotes are few and far between around here. I hope it continues to work for you for a long time. Thanks for answering my query.
