In reply to failing..., posted by Gee on October 9, 2006, at 14:10:37

Hi Gee,
in my first semester at college, i took physics. my roommate sat next to me in lecture. she fell asleep every day. i did all my hw assignments, but always had errors on them.

The first test, the prof put up a little histogram of student's scores (he was trying to tell us about statistics- bad example)

i still remember it to this day- the max score was 60. the peak of the distribution was around 50, and the bell curve kind of ended at 40. then there were 2 other points. one was the person who left halfway through the exam and announced loudly that she was dropping the class (she got a 22) Then there was me. I had a 29. the next highest score was 39. my roommate got a 45. (C+).

Devastating. I tried SO hard. went to all the study sessions, asked the prof for help during lab, and talked to some physics students to see if i was doing my homework right. I studied my butt off on the final. I ended up with an A- in the final and an A- in the class. A freaking miracle. I think my prof noticed that I was trying so hard, and he told me afterwards that he wanted to grade students on their LEARNING, not on their KNOWLEDGE. he said that my dramatic improvement during the semester showed that I was learning a lot, and that I had truly earned my A-.

Gee, please don't be so hard on yourself. It's okay to feel badly for a few days, but keep trying your hardest. Get extra help. Show them that you care. It hurts SO bad to fail. But it feels so good to get a C on your homework and know that it's better than the D 2 weeks ago. Sometimes you have to start at the bottom to make progress. Maybe you have to take this class twice, but you CAN do it. I know you can.
