It would be nice if there were more filters in the world. I've signed up for alerts on my local TV. And they beep me to tell me who is winning the game, or if there was a shooting somewhere in the world. When what I want to interrupt me from my work is to tell me that there's an incident on the interstate and it should be avoided on my way home. I don't need to know when a defendant has been convicted. I want to know if someone has broken out of prison and is in the area. I don't stop the notifications because I want the alerts, but I sure wish they had an option to *just* get alerts, not headlines.

It would be nice if Facebook would do the same. I don't really wish to hear about politics from my friends. That might affect my positive regard for them. And while I have no problems hearing about religion from most of my friends, there may be aspects I don't want to hear. Facebook robot scans everything we write for advertising clues. Why not scan items for topics we can choose not to hear about? It would at least give their nosiness some purpose. There could be a checklist.

I'd like to use social media to draw me together with others, not separate me from them. Well, theoretically at least. In practice I can't stop being appalled by the privacy practices. I think I may be just too old for social media. Or just too old fashioned or something.

In the meantime, maybe you could consider their statements as not really directed towards what *you* should do, as statements of what brings them happiness or comfort. If they have many other fine and useful qualities (to quote Thomas the Tank Engine), it's a shame to block them as friends because of one issue.
