On the east coast the rainfall generally gets less as you go inland, so that 150 miles in the rainfall is low, could be 30 inches a year. Another 200 miles in and it might be down to 10 or 15 a year. On the west coast the desert goes to the sea in the middle. So the centre is pretty dry and hot.
