It seems to me like the doc was just being straight with you. Psychiatry is a crap shoot. Nobody really knows how or why we get sick. Is it a developmetal thing or biochemical? Or both? Or neither? Nobody knows. Meds are hit-and-miss. One might get you better and change your life, one will make you worse. Nobody really knows how they work.
Even though your symptoms might trace back to your past and childhood history - don't discount the ability of meds to eliminate your symptoms. Some lucky people have their ailments completely disappear with meds. Keep trying, observing, making deductions, hypotheses. It is a crapshot but if you keep rolling you will eventually hit double six.
If you pdoc doeas a lot of research and is willing to try new and better combos on you, stick with him/her. Even if he/she is a bit cynical.
