Yea! The national news picked up the Petland puppy mill story. I am thrilled to see that others see this as newsworthy and I hope the screws are put on Petland, and others, to help end the puppy mills.
On another note, Larry Craig, Idaho senator, is working behind the scenes to allow the slaughter of wild horses. You might want to drop his office an email and let him know how you feel about that.
Mrs. T. Boone Pickens is buying one million acres of land as a refuge for the mustangs but I don't believe that we can ever drop our vigilance when it comes to politicians. Just because the slaughterhouses in the US are closed doesn't mean that horses can't be shipped to Mexico. With the economy the way it is thousands of horse owners are having to give their pets up because they can no longer afford to feed them.
If your particular choice of animals to help is horses, you can Google Avery Cleveland and find the Black Beauty Ranch (I think that is correct) and help them out. Of course there are refuges for every animal, plus our local shelters.
If you can even buy a bale of good hay and drop it off at your local shelter, it will provide warmth for several animals this winter. Families who have lost their homes are losing their pets and it is putting more strain on our local shelters.
Wow! I'm through now. :-)
p.s.1. don't forget the feral cats. we trap them in my town, a donor pays for spay/neuter, and we put them back into their colonies. One of our colonies now has 20 cats in it. Three families put food and water out for the kitties!!!
2. don't forget the wild birds...food and water. cracked (really small) corn from a feedstore works fine for winter birds.
3. shelter for domestic pets. if you have a neighbor who doesn't provide adequately, offer to buy them a bale of good grass hay for the pet's bed. $9 or $10.
