No! I think you should go alone! You need to be sensible thats all. I wouldn't recommend going to Mexico either by yourself. But San Diego would be fine I'm guessing.
As for hostels, I think they're fine - well anyway, America must have these accredited 'youth hostels'. Yes they do I just looked them up:
I've stayed in these hostels all over europe and they're totally fine, safe, often very nice. They have the little blue hut symbol.
Actually I think I feel far safer in a hostel than in a hotel, particulary those ones in the link above. I've never ever had a bad experience in a youth hostel - only nice experiences!
Another tip I would say is to buy a guidebook to San Diego - like a 'Rough Guide' or something like that. They'll usually list good hostels/hotels/b&bs etc and offer impartial advice. I find these guide books are indispensible when I'm travelling. They'll come with maps and underground maps and really useful things.
Hmmm. I'm sure you can get a credit card - although the limits might not be very high.
I would really stress to your mother how this trip will give you something to look forward to, how it will build your confidence, and able you to become a more mature individual. Point out to her that business people travel by themselves all the time! And anyway you're going to *meet* people. Some of my best experiences in my life have been whilst travelling.
And I've never lived on my own either, so don't let that hold you back!!
Kind regards
Meri
