my natural sleep cycle (if left to my own devises) is to sleep at around 2 or 3am and to wake around 10 or 11am.
if i have to get up early in the morning i try and get to sleep at a more reasonable hour. but i can't get to sleep because i don't need sleep yet.
the only way i can change my cycle (and yes it is possible to change it so that it is manageable) is to GET UP AT A REASONABLE HOUR.
it means you are a bit zonked out for a couple days though. those couple of days can be a vulnerable time (emotionally) as your body tries to cope with a lack of sleep. if you can bring yourself to exercise in the morning it can help wake you up (though i can't bring myself to do it i've heard it is true). having a busy / exercise full day can also help one get to sleep at a more reasonable hour.
i've done this and managed to change my sleep cycle in the face of external committments (like going to work or class). when left to my own devices, however... it doesn't work out so well for me...
