I think it might depend on the part of the country and the year the house was built or updated.
I don't really care much for carpets, and again that may have to do with living in a hot humid environment. Ever since I went to see my vet once and he was clearly distressed. When I asked what was wrong he said he had just lost a litter of pups to what he called "carpet syndrome". Apparently the carpeting had a fungus or something that the tiny pups couldn't handle. He said it wasn't unusual to have respiratory problems with carpets. We also had a neighbor with allergies and a strong love of carpets who even with cleaning had to change out the carpets every few years.
But then again we live in one of the most humid places in the US so that may have something to do with the carpet problem here. It may be no problem elsewhere.
I prefer something I can mop, preferably with Lysol or bleach (but never together of course). Of course cold toes are also rarely a problem here. :)
