A few home truths here

Posted by Racer on May 2, 2006, at 18:43:03

The first one being that anyone who starts off offering you a few home truths is about to say something you really want to hear, because they're almost insulting to you.

In my case, I'm just ranting. It does start off with "Never take seriously anything said after the part about a few home truths..."

And here's the first one: Rules are hard to make. Any time you make a rule, no matter how specific you try to be, not matter how hard you work to try to cover EVERY eventuality, you can't. Plain and simple: there is no rule that matters that won't have room for interpretation. If a rule does not include a certain leeway in interpretation, that is not a useful rule.

Another one is related to the same: if rules have been made, and you request a change to those rules, be aware that you can ask for the change -- but the answer might be no.

Similarly, if you ask that guidelines be codified to explain whether or not you can do something you want to do, be prepared for the guideline to prohibit explicitly what you're asking to do.

And sometimes? The more adversarial your presentation of your request, the more inner glee involved in turning you down.

Also, if you don't like a rule which is in place at, say, your local bowling alley -- then don't go there. Find another, or learn to live with the rule. If it's a rule that no one likes, and everyone therefore stays away from that bowling alley, you know what? The rule will change.

Yes. I am grumpy. I don't like people who are deliberately dense, or who choose to make no effort to understand what they are being told. And, in this case, there was even a picture involved! I want to say this here, because I could not say it in the situation that set all this off: "Lady, we drew you a picture. We showed it to you on your picture. We even showed you what we meant in the 3D world. No attorney is going to change the answer here, because the laws of physics do not respond to legal precedent."

OK. By now!
