Hi Cablegirl,
I've never heart that catnip hurts a cat. My vet told me that their liking it is genetic. Two out of my three walk away from it without a sniff. The catnip lover is 12 and it's nice to see her play with a toy like a kitten again.
Catnip grows in my yard, so she gets fresh stuff in summer. She's afraid to go outside which is good as I think an actual plant would put her over the edge. One of the others does play outside and naps in the catnip. Get her near a feather toy or a live bird and watch out. Catnip- ZZZ.
