I'd say in many cases the perpetrator shifts (or tries to) to the victim role. The victim becomes a rescuer to a rescuer who in turn has become the victim. And, particularly in the last couple of days' drama, there are a LOT of rescuers here! (a tribute to Babblers, I suppose... guess we're all a lot of wannabe white knights :) )
