How about finding some voluntary work in your field of study to gain some useful experience, look good on a CV and help you build some self esteem.
You didn't mention what your area of study was, but I found that theres a ton of charities who need all kinds of help.. I did IT support / web site support for a charity to keep my skills good and up to date, and then got involved locally as a "service user consultant".. ie, going out and giving training to professionals on what its like to be a service user, and also on committees and the like to give the service user perspective.. It helped me HUGELY and I would never be in full time work now if I hadn't done that. And it all led to my job!
Also, with voluntary work, you can try things out to see whether you'd like them..
If you were in the UK I could really help you out (we have a huge project at work for voluntary stuff, as its Year of the Volunteer here in the UK)..
Good uck,
Nikki
(hope this makes sense.. all alittle loopy from many drugs at hospital this morning!)
