Not totally false; that's what makes them fun and intriguing. They're usually based on at least a few facts.
I was reading one story about the death of JonBenet Ramsey that started with her father's financial links to government contractors and ended with tales of aliens working in hidden tunnels beneath the runways at the Denver airport.
