There are many different techniques. I respond well to a guided meditation, whereas others let the thoughts lead the meditation.
My T does a lovely meditation with me while my eyes are closed. My EMDR therapist does the same - they help me to center myself after a grueling session.
When I'm on my own I use a Deepak Chopra CD that is targeted for healing. It's really long, so I take it as far as I need at the time, or skip to the track that addresses my particular need.
Without a CD or a therapist, I close my eyes, keep my feet on the floor and my hands relaxed and faced palm upwards, and try to become aware of my breath flowing into and out of my body. I don't think of anything else, just my breath. Do that for 10 minutes and it's like you took a nap.
