Cross country driving can be scary, especially if you do it alone.
One thing I found that helps is to put some fun (and structure) into the drive. Grab maps and tour books ahead of time, figure out about how far you can reasonably get in a day and then look for something cool to see along the way. That would be your stopping place - so you can book a room in advance.
I personally (I'm a morning person) get up real early, drive a couple of hours and then stop for breakfast/brunch. Then get a few hours further down the road. I get to the destination around 3 - which gives me plenty of time to tour some sight.
Something about knowing there is something cool at the end of the road makes the driving easier. And the planning helps get rid of the jitters.
