Uh . . .there was no cranberry sauce at my family's table today, despite the fact that we live in Wisconin near a large cranberry marsh!
My girlfriend came with to visit, and she's actually being treated like a welcome guest, if not like part of the family, this year. This is good news, since my mom was always really cold to her in the past.
We had turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, and that green bean/cream of mushroom soup/french onion casserole. My gf, being from Hawaii, has never had it before, and she agreed that it is really good.
On the down side, my mom took advantage of the chance to give me all sorts of bad news -- my childhood doctor died in a car accident(a saint of a man; he worked something like 23 hours a day for his patients), my cousin's child has been diagnosed with autism, etc. etc. Why do people do that? I guess it's an attempt to bond, but it seems misguided to store up the bad news for a holiday. It was so hard for me to focus on the present with a picture of a duck hanging up, because my doctor always had duck paintings in his examination rooms.
Anyways, I guess life is always a mixed bag, and part of Thanksgiving is an attempt to look on the bright side. So I guess that's what we have to do; we can be glad that there is as much of a bright side as there is.
