How do y'all know each other so well, emails, etc?

i'm new here, someone told me about this board, so please bear with me if what i'm asking is common knowledge
after reading various threads on here (i'm sorry to hear of the death of an apparently beloved and WELL KNOWN poster) i am really wondering how everyone here seems to know each other so well to the point of knowing each other's *real names* and also having each other's email addresses when they are not included in the threads?
do people actually post their email addresses on here (for ALL to see) and then get to know each other (*real names*, etc.) that way (via emailing)?
