Hi Pat. I'm new to this Board, but not to depression and anxiety. I 'survived' for a number of years on Xanax taken liberally every day. I was able to function and control my anxiety to some degree, but I was not getting better - I was getting worse. I finally asked to see a pdoc who treated me for depression (SSRI's) and gradually got me off the Xanax. While I am still struggling to find an effective antidepressant for me, I know that the anxiety was a symptom and not the root problem.
Are you taking anything other than Ativan. The benzodiazepine of choice for a lot of pdocs seems to be clonazepam (Klonopin) which is much longer acting than ativan but doesn't give that immediate relief or high.
As to getting through the next weeks while under stress, you seem to be able to recognize what you need to do. In the longer term I would explore a better way of dealing with the cause(s) of your anxiety, 'cause stresses will most surely come around again.Good Luck
