What Open provided was a place where we could go to hang out and wait for other Babblers. A known place where people could meet.
Yahoo messenger does work (and sometimes when Open was being buggy - which it was often - it is probably a good choice for Yahoo to discontinue the chat, it was awful - we do use Messenger conference to get together). But the problem is that you need to invite people to the conference specifically, which means that you need to know their Yahoo ID in advance. The other disadvantage is that there is no way to know that a conference is going on unless you are invited. So while if someone was lonely, they could go to Open and see if anyone was around, there is no conference unless someone sets one up.
I'm rambling... What we need is a central location where we can check to see if anyone else wants to chat that doesn't require us to know other people's yahoo ids in advance. And a way to exchange IDs so that a conference can be set up. A thread won't really do it, because you would have to keep checking the thread to see if anyone had expressed interest, and we would have to have a way to exchange IDs to set the conference up (which could be done with Babblemail).
It was nice to have a chat room where you could just go and check to see if anyone was there. There must be a solution to this. The geeks must know a way!
